5 Times You Should Not Workout!

blog when to workout

Last week, I caught the awful Covid bug and BOY did it whoop me! Having taken 5 full days off from any activity at all, let alone complete a #Balance workout, I thought it would be a great time to chat with my #balance community about when it is NOT a good idea to work out!

You guys know I’m ALL ABOUT kicking our excuses to the curb and making workouts part of our busy lives, but there are definitely situations when I would advise that REST is more important than forcing yourself to do a workout.

1) Here's my top 5!

1) You're sick

When you’re sick, your body is under a lot of stress to fight off the bug. Your body has mechanisms like heating up your body (a fever) and coughing to kill and get rid of the germs. In order to fight the bug, our bodies need a ton of rest and fluids. Committing to a workout is only going to add additional stress to your body and prolong the sickness.

2) You're under a lot of stress

Although exercise can be a huge stress reliever, oftentimes the body can be so extremely stressed that it becomes inflamed. Committing to a HIIT workout while the body is in overdrive often leads to overuse injuries. Try to continue your "destressing" exercise habits but in a low impact way like a mindful walk or a stretching routine. The healthy movement will help your stress levels but also prevent injury.

3) You're sleep deprived

If your body is already exhausted, there's no sense digging it into the ground with another hard workout and setting yourself back even further. Your body will do MUCH better with a full night's sleep! Remember, #balance is about consistency and longevity...NOT INTENSITY! If you’re not averaging 6-8 hours of restful sleep, then you have my full permission to hit the snooze alarm!

4) You're extremely sore

Soreness is due to tearing muscle fibers and build up of lactic acid....AKA your body is NOT fully recovered and needs more time before you commit to another hard workout! BUT, remember....the less you move the more you will hurt! Try going for a light walk, taking an epsom salt bath and then completing one of my #BALANCE stretching routines! Give your body a break but try not to stay still for too long!

5) Working out means missing a special occasion

No single workout is worth missing out on LIFE! Whether it’s a family gathering, a work event, or even just something silly that you are really looking forward to....LIFE is your priority. NOT exercise. We’re in this for the long haul #BALANCE family, so make exercise part of your daily routine but never let it get in the way of making memories!

#BALANCE is a journey! One day at a time ladies!

You've got this!
